WW breakpoints guide- where?

Is there a place that explains the tech details of WW? Like what are breakpoints, how to search for adequate-speed weapons, how to calculate ias etc.? Preferably for beginners.

Thanks.|||In terms of attack speed there's not that much to it:
  • Only on-weapon IAS counts. Calculator.

  • The first two attacks of a whirl sequence always occur at 4 and 8 frames after you start whirling (to give you an idea when this is, d2 runs at 25 frames per second). After those two hits, how often you attack is based on weapon speed/ias.

  • If you dual wield you hit with both weapons at the same time, except for the attack at frame 4 where only your primary weapon is used.

|||Thanks, but:

-what are breakpoints?

-why some breakpoints are negative numbers?|||You're thinking of the Weapon Speed Modifier (WSM) which is listed on Arreat Summit next to the weapons' speed. It's an indication of the base speed; a more negative number means the weapon is faster.

Breakpoints are certain IAS (increased attack speed) values you need to reach in order for your attack to be faster. You can't just add gloves with 20 IAS and expect that you'll attack faster. You need to calculate breakpoints with the calculator I linked above and sum how much IAS you've got on your gear to see where you stand relative to the breakpoints.

Dragoon does a decent job of explaining the basics. As a player it's nice to understand it, but you really don't need to know how this actually links up with calculating breakpoints. I sure don't.

Quote:

WIAS = Increased Attack Speed Found on a Weapon

OIAS = Increased Attack Speed Found on non-weapon Equipment

IAS = Total Increased Attack Speed of all Equipment

EIAS = The effective IAS after calculating diminishing returns according to the formula:

= 120 (IAS) / (120 + IAS)

SIAS = All of the Increased Attack Speed you are gaining from skills. Skill IAS is not subject to diminishing returns and is added in after using the diminishing formula. These include Werewolf, Frenzy, Burst of Speed, Fanaticism, etc.

WS = Weapon Speed; This is the negative value of those numbers appearing in the Arreat Summit (WSM) for the base item type you are using. A Phaseblade with WSM [-30] would have a WS of 30 added to the formula.

SI = Speed Increase = WS + SIAS + EIAS

WW works differently in that OIAS and SIAS has no effect, and WIAS works as EIAS. Therefore you only have to sum WS and WIAS to know what speed you're attacking at.

For example: You have a Small Crescent, WSM [10], with 50 IAS

-10 + 50 = 40

40 is higher than 34 (the last WW breakpoint) so you attack every 4 frames.|||I have looked at the linked Calculator and would like to ask some questions:

1) If I understand correctly, the biggest goal in using the Calculator is to get a WW weapon that attains the highest "attacks per second" number? Is a bigger number better for WW'ing?

2) Should I even consider using for WW a Weapon that has less than "Very fast attack speed" on its in-game description? Or is anything else too slow?

3) In the Calculator there is a Weapon-IAS section with percentages. If my weapon's description reads "30% increased attack speed", do I choose 30% in the Calculator? Or that's not the way it works?

4) There's also a Skill section. Do I select "Whirlwind" or leave it as it is?|||1) That is the idea. More attacks per second is obviously better, since you're attacking more often. The fastest whirlwind goes is 4 frames per attack which equals 6.25 attacks per second.

2) While it gives you a rough indication, you can't tell from that description how fast your WW hits. To get the most out of WW it's important to have a fast weapon, yes.

3) That's exactly what you do. Just remember to also tell it what weapon you're actually using (the third drop-down menu)

4) Well, if you're using the Whirlwind skill...|||Quote:

as usual this is in stickies|||Quote:

What I meant to say is: let's say I have a lot of good weapons (from different boss runs). Should I run them all thru the Calculator and only keep the ones that got the best "attacks per second" results, and then use *them* for WW? Is this the standard way WW players choose their weapons?|||yup usually
