I've always wanted to make one of these barbs, but never got around to it. So can someone please help me?
And I want to do a single throw barb, unless doublethrow is just THAT much better.
I need help with:
skill allocation
equipment (including if ed jewels are better for this build)
stat allocation
To anyone that helps me, thanks very much! If there already is a thread somewhere that goes over this, please link.
And if someone has a good eth/rep/ias war javalin or throwing spear, I'd be willing to try to trade for it. I'm uswest, ladder. Thanks!|||Seems like you already know something about this sort of build. I would say I don't know much at all except I remember this barb with a single javalin, low level, and with ed% damage jewels all over. He was actually HC and could easily destroy my basic HC pvm. I think he had a little cold damage too which is annoying with not cbf mods. cbf mods are rare and I think Hawkmail is the only item that has that at that lvl. (oops and Death's Gaurd -sash)|||Well, do you remember what level he was exactly? Because double throw is lvl 12, and if he was lvl 9 then he'd HAVE to be single throw. Plus, vlld (lvl 9-13 or so) everyone has to use a shield, it's just a must.
Considering I'm going to be lvl 18-19 for my barb, it's now possible to run faster and create more room between me and my opponent, thus double throw becomes more viable than at lvl 12.
Also for single throw the mastery % damage increase for throwing items gets calculated twice, but I'd also be throwing much less javs. But I'd have max block.
So
Single throw:
More damage per jav
able to block
throws slower
Almost never run out of javs
Double throw:
Less damage per jav
No block
Throws much faster
Possibly run out of javs much sooner.
Thoughts?
Or should I just have single throw on one side, and double on the other?|||It was awhile ago but I'm pretty sure he was lvl18 single throw. He had ed jewels in shield.|||2 piece Hsaru's set also gives CBF|||Quote:
2 piece Hsaru's set also gives CBF
it requires all three pieces and the shield is crap for lld.
-you should use double throw mainly, though i'm sure you'll want a shield handy.
-you could have +1 wc weapons on switch to buff with.
-dont bother with eth weapons unless you have several of them, they run out too fast.
-use max damage jewels|||Yeah, I was planning to use death's gloves and belt anyway.
But, for single throw, since I won't go through it as quick, wouldn't an eth/replen java work?
Thanks very much for the input guys.|||I had one of these a couple of seasons ago that I made level 20 to use sander's but apart from that it should be the same deal.
I have heard good things about double throw, but I always found myself using single throw a lot more. This maybe be due to a lack of frw charms, but I think if you consider you'll be going up against bowzons and zeal/chargers (unless pking in quest games) single throw makes enough sense.
Roy has a very nice guide over at lld101 which I used to get most of my ideas from.
Skill allocation:
If you decide to go single throw, I would max throwing mastery, and probably put the rest in shout. the extra points if you do all the quests could go into leap and iron skin, battlecry might be interesting, but I've never tried it.
What I did was to max throwing mastery, double swing, and put one point into iron skin and double throw. My single throw was meant to be backup for when my mana and/or javs ran out, but it happened so often that it became my main skill. If you choose to go this route, you can try using double swing as a backup skill, as it costs 0 mana at that level, but without the mastery and without a shield I never found it much help except against pubs.
Equipment:
Again, check out Roy's guide if you can find it, there's some good suggestions. From my experience, throwing spears > war javs simply because they can be dex glitched which is pretty huge for a ranged character (or a pker).
If you're unaware, a dex glitched throwing weapon will be completely invisible to other players, and also you will appear to be standing still doing nothing while you are in the throwing animation.
Generally speaking, a low ed build will benefit more from ed jewels, and a high ed build will benefit more from +min or +max jewels. If you use one item filled with ed jewels, the damage displayed on the lcs will be better, but in the end maxers win out with real damage, plus they can get two useful affixes, where an ed jewel will only get to 20%.
-Helm-
+3 throwing mastery barb helm with 3 sockets is a pain in the arse to find, I would settle for 2 sockets to begin with and put you mediocre jewels in there
Duskdeep looks like crap, but is exceedingly cheap and I found it useful until I found a +3 helm
a 3 socket mask with maxers will probably be useful to other builds and hence would be tradable after you find your +3 helm
-Armor-
Twitchthroe is the only thing I ever used
You may be able to work out something with a higher def armor and more sockets, but you will have to adjust your stats which will mean less life. start with twitch, it's cheap anyway
-Weapon-
If you use double throw, do not use eth/rep tspears as they will run out far too quickly for the rep to be of use. If you use single throw, keep a set of eth/rep on switch (or your main set) and switch to plain ones (or more eth/rep ones) for longer duels.
Look for 20 ias, damage, ar, knockback, amp, and keep in mind that there's always something better. War javs mean lower dex req (no glitching) but you will need ~60 for max block anyway.
-Shield-
Bone shield of deflecting with 2 sockets. Other useful mods could be fhr, defense, resistances, eth/rep. Plain ones are easy to shop though. Socket with maxers or min-maxers
-Gloves/belt/boots-
Death's partial set and cow boots are the obvious choices.
A defense oriented build might be able to use sigs (you need the 30ias to hit a breakpoint) but will sink a lot into strength to do it.
-Jewelry-
Angelic combo
If you go double throw, a really nice rare with rep and lots of mana and stuff might be useful, but start with angelics, you'll probably never need anything else.
-Inventory-
Your throw will only be dex glitched if you use dex from charms to wear your weapon. This means that if you use angelics+cow boots+twitch, you will have 20+40 dex and be unable to glitch eth tspears. You could choose change those items around, or choose to use non eth javs, or choose to not bother with glitching.
Large charms can have up to 5 dex (or 5 str) grand charms can get 5-6
Large charms can have 5% frw, Grand charms can have 7% frw
Large charms can have up to +3 max dmg +20 ar, Grand Charms can have up to +6 damage +48 ar
Small charms can get up to 15 life and can also have handy secondary mods.
Find a balance to fill out the holes in your other equipment. In general damage and speed are priorities.
Stat Allocation:
You can go for pure vita and wear everything if you have 5 dex from charms. If you change around the gear, you might have to pump strength or dex a bit.
As a single thrower, you probably want to find high defense gear a bit more than a double thrower to make use of your shout.
All in all, it's a fun build, and does well against most of the common competition. Hope you find some nice javs and make it.|||Thanks very much for the information Age!
Do you remember how much damage your tspears did? So I can get in the ballpark.
Recently I found a rare bone shield with the mods:
17 fhr
30/20 block mod
10 life
3 mana
22% pr (useless)
I'll socket with shenk.
As you can see, there's no sockets. I like this shield, because it has everything I need EXCEPT for that second socket. So, should I hunt for a better one, or is that extra 15-20 maxer not "worth it"?|||In my opinion, the extra socket is worth it even on a plain bone shield of deflecting. It depends a bit on what your jewel collection is like I guess. You could socket that rare and put a plain 15 maxer in and use it as a switch shield, but you'd probably be better served by two shopped BSoDs
The extra 15 max damage is ~3 grand charms worth, the fhr and small life bonus is worth ~2 grand charms.
The tspears are long gone now, but I do remember I was using req level 19 which opens up the next ed prefix, so they wouldn't compare very truthfully to a level 18 build anyway. Take a look at the affix lists on arreat summit (anything below 25 can be used at level 18) for an idea of what mods to expect. Unless you're exceedingly wealthy, don't expect to start with amazing javs, it's not like you need them anyway.
